J.Lo Mini Bio
Jennifer Lopez was born Jennifer Jennifer Lynn Lopez in the Castle Hill district of The Bronx, NY, on 24th July, 1969.
Jennifer’s parents were immigrants from Puerto Rico, who had lived in The Bronx since childhood. The Lopez family were relatively wealthy in comparison to some of their neighbours. Jennifer’s father, David was a computer technician and her mother, Guadalupe was a kindergarten teacher.
Jennifer Lopez was the middle child of all female siblings, but her ‘middle child’ status never affected her confidence and her ambition. From the age of 5, she was attending singing and dancing lessons. Jennifer was also a reknown athlete at her Catholic high school, excelling in field events and gymnasitcs.
While at high school and after she left, Jennifer had made up her mind to make a career in show business, and she paid for her dancing lessons with money aquired from working in a law firm. However, Jennifer’s mother was not quite so keen on Jennifer’s ambitions, and, although the family remained very close, Jennifer left home at the age of 18 to continue her career.
Jennifer Lopez’ big break came when she achieved the role of a ‘fly girl’ in the hit 1990 comedy, ‘In Living Color‘ and went on from there to be a dancer for Janet Jackson. But it was in films that Jennifer achieved her best early success.
J.Lo’s Film Career:
Already having made a name for herself as an international actress with Wesley Snipe in the film, Money Train, Lopez passed the gruelling audtion to be the major star in the 1997 film ‘Selena‘, the story of the Tejano pop singer of the same name.
Lopez received critical acclaim for her portraying of Selena and received a Golden Globe award for best actress.
With her widespread fame for Money Train and her acclaim for Selena, Jennifer’s film career was set. The film Anaconda was not a huge box office success, but Lopez was again praised for her role and the praise continued to grow for her role opposite Sean Penn in the movie ‘U Turn‘ (1997).
The 1998 movie, Out Of Sight, with George Clooney, gained Lopez more rave reviews for her role as a deputy federal marshal, and it was at this point that Jennifer became the highest paid latina film artist in Hollywood history (and continues that role today).
J.Lo’s Musical Career:
But alongside her film career, Jennifer Lopez was becoming an international singing star. Her first album, ‘On The 6‘ was released in 1999 and did extremely well. It included the international number one hit ‘If You Had My Love‘ and proved that Jennifer Lopez culd make it as a singer as well as an actress. It also brought her to fans who may not have seen her movies, so was a widescale success. Interestingly, the album included a spanish language duet with Mark Anthony, who was to become her husband, but not until 2004, after both partners had been through a number of difficult and stormy relationships.
Jennifer’s second album, J.Lo, was released in 2001 and opened at number one on the Billboard Top 100. shortly afterwards, her film The Wedding Planner, became number one on the American box office charts, making J.Lo the first singer/actress to have simultaneous number one hits and a rival to only Elvis and The Beatles for the overall claim to fame.
J Lo’s Relationships:
Jennifer Lopez has had a number of highly publicised relationships, including three marriages (including her present marriage to Mark Anthony) and two long term relationships (one with Sean Combs and one with Ben Affleck, which have hit the headlines, often for the wrong reasons). She gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl, on February 22nd 2008 and, although she had continued to perform on stage up to fairly close to the birth, Lopez then took time out for several months to be with her children and her husband Mark Anthony. she began to appear again ‘in the spotlight’ at the end of 2008 and has recently begun work on the movie The Backup Plan, to be released in 2010.
J.Lo as a business:
As well as having best selling albums and box office hit films, Jennifer Lopez has other financial interests. She has run two very successful fashion lines and has had a number of perfumes produced in her name.
J.Lo and Human Rights:
Something that is often forgotten within the media frenzy about J’Lo’s relationships, is her work on Human rights.
She has been involved in promoting UNICEF and, in 2007 received an ‘Artists For Amnesty International’ Award for her production and role in the film Bordertown, which weffectively exposed the murders on hundreds of women in the city of Juarez, Mexico.
Jennifer continues to release albums and to star in box office hit movies, and although one of her films, Gigli, with her then boyfriend, Ben Affleck, was panned by the critics and had limited success, and her relationships with the Hip Hop community, particularly Sean Combs, have caused her problems with media criticism, none of this has failed to diminish Jennifer’s consistent popularity with the record buying and movie going public. She is a star of the first order who has shown women the World over that drive and ambition, when combined with talent, will win through, whatever the obstacles.
