Jennifer Lopez Is She Really Jenny From The Block?
30 May 2009, by admin
Although Jennifer Lopez is famous for her acting and singing (and for simply being a celebrity) all over the World, and has had many hit records, there is one song which resonates in many people’s minds when they think of J.Lo, and that is ‘Jenny From the Block’.
The words: “Don’t be fooled by the rocks I got. I’m still Jenny from the block.” Produced a very mixed reception.
On the one hand, Jennifer Lopez appeared to be saying that she was unaffected by her great fame and tremendous wealth. And yet her drive to be an all round entertainer and her business acumen seemed to tell us that Jenny did indeed need her rocks and her fame. In fact, it was her drive to achieve which had made her the success she is.
On the other hand, that line from ‘Jenny From The Block’ conjured up the image of a girl from a poor neighbourhood who had made good, but has never forgotten her roots. However, as bitchy gossip columnists were quick to tell us, Jennifer Lopez did not come from a poor background – her parents were reasonably well-off. So the lines were portraying a Jennifer Lopez who never really existed and, could actually be seen as a ’smack in the mouth’ to those Puerto Rican families who lived in poorer neighbourhoods.
And then there was the issue of ‘the rocks’, particularly one very large rock worn on Jennifer’s finger. The engagement ring given to her by her then fiance Ben Affleck. In fact, rumour had it that Jennifer’s reference to the rocks was in some way a tribute to her love for Affleck – although many found this hard to work out.
Either way, when Lopez and Affleck called off their wedding and subsequently split up, that line eventually became more than a thorn in Jennifer’s side; it became an emotional scar and she called for the line to be erased from all reprints of the song. and, following the development of her relatinship with Mark Anthony, Jennifer asked that the video no longer be shown on MTV and VH1, as, so the gossips would have us believe, “it makes her new partner jealous of her previous relationship with Ben Affleck”.
So, is Jennifer Lopez still your ‘Jenny From The Block’ and do we really care about that line?
I would say that Jennifer Lopez is bigger and more talented than a mis-represented line in one of her many successful songs.
But she can be the ‘Jenny’ on my block any time
